Ballina Dolphins success at Connacht Region B & C Swimming Gala

Ballina Dolphins Swimming Club hosted their annual Connacht B & C Gala, sponsored by Ballina Beverages at Ballina Swimming Pool recently. A large number of swimmers from Ballina Dolphins, Ballina, Sligo, Castlebar, Claremorris and Westport Swimming Clubs competed in the gala. Ballina Dolphins swimmers had great success in the featured swims – backcrawl, breaststroke and individual medley On the day seven A certificates were achieved by Ballina Dolphins swimmers; in the B category a total of three gold, three silver and one bronze were won and in the C category three gold, four silver and two bronze were won.

Brendan Patten was the winner of the second golfer of the year stroke competition, sponsored by Cox’s Bar and Restaurant, Castlebar, with a 68. Noel O’Malley on 69, finished runner up, with Willie McGee claimingthird place on 71. The gross was won by Fergus Rothwell with a 76. Noel’s consecutive second place finish puts him top of the golfer of the year leaderboard.

Second act of Kingdom showdown on Sunday

It's been a rollercoaster ride though this year’s National Football League for Mayo so far and last Sunday was no different. The game saw Mayo lead Kerry by eight points at one stage in the first half, but ended with them clinging on manfully to hold out against the Kerry challenge as long as possible when they were forced to play the last 25 or so minutes with only 14 men – following Lee Keegan’s dispatch for an early shower after he was suckered into a sloppy foul resulting in a second yellow flashed in his general direction.

New body to market golf in the west of Ireland to be launched

The Ireland West Golf Clubs Association will be launched at 8pm on Wednesday, April 11 at the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, Co. Mayo. At its first public meeting the chairman of the new body, Paul O’Neill, will outline the objectives of the new association and explain the strategy that he believes must be put in place to encourage the maximum number of golfing tourists to the Connacht region.

Kiltimagh co-driver John Higgins lost out on success on Sunday’s Kerry Stages Rally by the narrowest of margins, after he and driver Brian O’Mahony finished the eight-stage event in a dead heat with the similar Subaru WRC of Thomas Fitzmaurice and Fionn Foley from Kerry. It was the local crew though who were to claim victory on tie-break rules, after setting a time one second faster than their rivals on the final stage.

Boats to hit the water today in Rosmoney

As the skies begin to clear and the weather improves Mayo Sailing Club is anticipating the start of another season. Boats will be lifted into the water at Rosmoney Pier on Friday next, April 6. Alongside the local racing the highlight of the season this year will be a fleet of boats sailing to Galway to be part of the Volvo Ocean Race. Brian Sheridan, the Harbour Master of Galway Docks, travelled to speak to club members on Friday last and gave an enthusiastic talk about the finishing of Round the World race in Galway on July 3.

Sports Capital Grant Scheme information night

Following the recent announcement by Minister of State for Sport and Tourism Michael Ring of the Government’s €30 million fund to develop sporting facilities across the country, Mayo Sports Partnership will host an information workshop on the scheme to assist groups, etc, in making an application. The workshop will take place in the Mayo Education Centre on Wednesday April 11 at 8pm. The workshop will be delivered by Joe Butler who has been instrumental in securing sports capital funding for the Mayo Football Association’s facility in Milebush. Joe has assisted many organisations and groups from various codes in the past in their applications.
