It is time for a new batch of clubs to step up

Fri, May 18, 2012

I popped along to Crossmolina last Saturday evening to see my former team, Crossmolina, play against Davitts in round two of the league. It was not too pretty to watch because the standard of football was not particularly good on this occasion. At no stage did I get the impression that Davitts were going to beat Crossmolina which will understandably be a concern for them, as they will be really anxious to continue to play at this higher level of football into the foreseeable future. There will not be too many clubs in a forgiving mood during this league campaign, so picking up points at every and any opportunity is essential. Those teams that got a real scare of relegation last year will be more determined than ever to avoid being sucked into the same territory again this year, so it is going to be a real baptism of fire for the Ballindine club as they will no doubt discover.

Westport are a young team that caught my eye long before last weekend’s results appeared on my radar. Crossmolina played them in the last round of the senior league late last year, and despite the match having little significance they really impressed with their application and attitude on that occasion. After their first round victory in this year’s league over Shrule/Glencorrib they entertained a much more potent outfit in Ballaghdareen last Saturday. In conversation with the Westport manager Tomas Tierney before the game he told me this encounter would give Westport a truer benchmark of how much they have progressed over the last two years. He was in jubilant form when we spoke on Sunday after their game as his young side had registered a four point victory over their more fancied opponents. Notwithstanding the fact that Ballaghdareen were missing a couple of players this was a notable scalp to take and perhaps suggests two teams heading in opposite directions? I have suggested in this column on more than one occasion that I cannot understand how a team laced with such talent, ie, Ballaghdareen, has not delivered more than one senior championship title in recent years.

McCullagh victorious on Mayo Autocross

Fri, May 18, 2012

Reigning Mayo Autocross champion Peter McCullagh carried on from where he finished 2011, with victory on Mayo and District Motorsport Club’s Loose Surface Autocross on Sunday. The Maynooth driver was the class of the field in his Mitsubishi Evo 9, recording a comfortable winning margin of over two seconds over his rivals after a fine final run over the challenging 4.6 kilometre circuit at Harrington’s Quarry, The Valley, Swinford.

Double winner in 2011, Williamstown driver Derek Deane upheld local club honours with second in his JB Buggy, while James Lannon from Boyle, another former winner, took the final podium place.

While there are still two weeks left before May comes to an end, the action will throw in on home soil in the All Ireland football championship on Sunday in earnest. Westport make three out of three

Fri, May 04, 2012

Westport Untied kept up their 100 per cent start to the Super League last weekend with a 2-0 win over a winless Straide and Foxford United. The tangerine clad side were condemned to their third defeat on the trot and will have to turn things around soon or they could be sinking back down to the Premier A before they know it. JP O’Gorman put Westport on their way with a goal inside a quarter of a hour and Pat Fitzgerald made sure with a strike from the penalty spot midway through the second half. The champions Castlebar Celtic were made to work hard by Michael Hutton’s Claremorris side in Celtic Park to pick up their second win of the season. Stevie Gavin was the man who broke the deadlock in what was very tough battle between a Claremorris side who are looking to make improvements on last year’s very competitive run in the league. Both sides are locked together on six points from their opening three games, alongside Ballina Town. Ballina who went down to Westport United in the previous week bounced back with style with a 4-1 win over Manulla at home last weekend. The final game in last weekend’s Super League saw Fahy Rovers come home from Erris with a point after a 0-0 draw with Iorras Aontaithe.
