Bidwell leads Barrett and Devanney home in Balla 8K

Fri, May 25, 2012

Even without a couple of the hills at the start of the traditional 10k course, the Balla 8k proved to be a stern test. After a fast downhill start, the field hit a wall of reality as they headed up over the railway bridge in the first kilometre. Winner Matt Bidwell led Roger Barrett all the way to the finish, but could never really relax as Roger maintained the pressure just seconds behind. Sean Gallagher and Anto Devanney had their own battle for third until Anto went to the front in the closing stages.

Is the time right for Tierney’s men to strike?

Fri, May 25, 2012

This weekend heralds the start of everything that 16 sides have been preparing for since Ballintubber claimed the Moclair cup for a second year in a row last autumn. Since that moment, everyone else has been looking forward to trying to knock the champions off their perch. The talk over the winter was of the old reliables having a crack, the likes of Knockmore, Ballina, and Castlebar being the kind of sides who could put a dent in Ray Prendergast Park ambitions for three in a row.

It is time for a new batch of clubs to step up

Fri, May 18, 2012

I popped along to Crossmolina last Saturday evening to see my former team, Crossmolina, play against Davitts in round two of the league. It was not too pretty to watch because the standard of football was not particularly good on this occasion. At no stage did I get the impression that Davitts were going to beat Crossmolina which will understandably be a concern for them, as they will be really anxious to continue to play at this higher level of football into the foreseeable future. There will not be too many clubs in a forgiving mood during this league campaign, so picking up points at every and any opportunity is essential. Those teams that got a real scare of relegation last year will be more determined than ever to avoid being sucked into the same territory again this year, so it is going to be a real baptism of fire for the Ballindine club as they will no doubt discover.

While there are still two weeks left before May comes to an end, the action will throw in on home soil in the All Ireland football championship on Sunday in earnest. Potential new home for Westport United

Fri, May 18, 2012

Following on from their famous win over Athenry on penalties in last weekends Connacht Junior Cup final in Terryland Park, there was some more good news surrounding Westport United this week.

Two of Westport’s most famous institutions – Westport United Football Club and Westport House – are at an advanced stage in negotiations, which if concluded successfully, has the potential to realise international class sporting facilities for Westport United on the grounds of the world famous Westport House. The 13 acre site at the centre of the discussions is located close to the newly developed Gaelscoil na Cruaiche on the Golf Course Road and it has the capacity to include a number of international playing pitches, training pitches, and a clubhouse.
