All roads lead to Athlone

All roads throughout the country will lead to Athlone this coming weekend from May 25 to May 27 for the first weekend of the HSE National Community Games finals. More than 3,000 young competitors will descend on the Athlone Institute of Technology to take part in various sporting and cultural events. Mayo Community Games will be strongly represented by 90 young participants who will compete in art, model making, handwriting, chess, project, indoor soccer, table quiz, table tennis, and mixed distance relays. In the cultural section there is competition in the group music, dancing and singing. The programme will also include solo music, singing and solo recitation.

The Castlebar u12 chess team are in contention for three in a row at u12 level when they compete this weekend. Expectations are high that Evan Doyle, Dara Ludden, Alan Kelly, Diarmuid McGrath, and Zalan Nemeth can also do the business this year.

In the indoor soccer competition, Mayo will be represented by Burrishoole girls at u13 level with Kilmaine girls hoping to do the business at the u15 grade.

Mayo will be making a welcome return to the table tennis competition in the national finals with Castlebar taking part in the u13 competition and Kilmovee in the u15 event. There will also be four Mayo teams in the mixed distance relays at u12 and u14 level. In the boys’ u12 the team will be made up of Patrick Chambers, Mark Moran, Luke Dawson, Patrick McAndrew and Eoin Murphy. The girls’ u12 team comprises Niamh McCann, Anna Yeats, Bridget Mills, Eorna Mulroy, and Joanne Loftus. The boys u14 team is Ben Walsh, Chris O’Sullivan, Fiachara Byrne and Arron Doherty, the final relay team is the girls u14 team of Siobhan Lyons, Allanah Duffy, Emma Loftus, and Aoife O’Brien.
