Fifty-metre pool continues to cause ripples

Mayo group plan solidarity rally for Palestine

A demonstration in solidarity with the people of Gaza and Palestine, is taking place at Market Square, Castlebar, tomorrow (Saturday) at 4 pm.

The demonstration is being organised by Mayo Friends of Palestine, a Palestine solidarity group, in response to the latest Israeli military action in Gaza, in which more than 200 Palestinians have died, according to world news agency reports.

Mayo compensation payouts higher than national average

Thirty-one public liability claims were made in Mayo in 2013 with €888,000 paid out in compensation, according to new figures released by the Injuries Board.  

Slips, trips and falls were by far the main cause of public liability accidents and, nationally, €44 million in compensation was paid out in 2013.

Shell welcomes GSOC's rejection of claim that alcohol was given to gardaí

Shell has welcomed the decision by GSOC (Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission) that there is no evidence to support claims the oil company delivered alcohol to local garda stations.

In a two-page report published on Friday, GSOC said there was no substance to the allegations that a company called OSSL, which was employed by Shell from 2005 to 2010, supplied alcohol to gardaí on behalf of Shell.

Small Mayo schools take biggest hit in teacher cuts

Eleven of the 39 small primary schools across the country that are set to lose a teacher and classroom posts in September are in Mayo, it has emerged.

The new figures, revealed by Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn in response to a parliamentary question tabled by Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív, show small schools in Mayo are losing considerably more teachers than any other county in Ireland.
