Finding a home

The issue of a permanent home for the new Castlebar Municipal District was raised again at the July meeting of the municipal district. Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne said he felt the municipal district should have a proper chamber to hold its meetings in and receive people in, and that the current meeting venue in the Áras was not suitable especially if members of the public wanted to attend.

The chairperson of the Castlebar Municipal District, Cllr Al McDonnell, said that the people wanted the position to have a chain or a symbol of office. He told the July meeting of the municipal district he had been invited to a number of events and the organisers of those events had told him not to attend if he did not have chain or a symbol to show his status.

Castlebar councillors will dress to impress

The sartorial appearance of the members of the Castlebar Municipal District came up for discussion at their July meeting this week. Cllr Frank Durcan said he wanted to see the chairperson of the district wear a coat and tie while representing the area (if he is a man). Cllr Therese Ruane and Lisa Chambers joked across the chamber that would apply to them too. Cllr Chambers quipped that it would be fine “as long as no-one comes in dressed like they’ve been dragged through a bush backwards”.

Keeping things trim

The issue of grass cutting in estates outside the old town council area in Castlebar in the new municipal district was raised at the Castlebar Municipal District this week. Fianna Fáil councillor Lisa Chambers said that she had been contacted by a number of people in the Kiltimagh area wondering when it would be done. However, she was informed by senior executive engineer for Mayo County Council, Anne Sweeney, that with the changeover in local government areas in the middle of the year the budgets that had been set at the start of the year did not allow for cutting at present and it would have to be allocated by the councillors in their budget for next year. Ms Sweeney also said a number of estates had been taken over in the Castlebar town area late last year after the budget had been agreed by the council, and there was not money budgeted this year to take care of them too.
