Mayo towns to benefit from ESB and Vodafone link up

The towns of Ballina, Castlebar, and Westport, are to benefit from a joint venture agreed this week by Vodafone and the ESB. The venture will see the companies invest €450 million in 50 towns, including the three in Mayo, in building a 100 per cent fibre-to-the-building, broadband network offering speeds from 200 Mbps to 1000 Mbps, propelling Ireland into the ranks of the world’s fastest broadband countries.

Healthy school initiative at Davitt College

Davitt College has launched a new initiative to promote better physical and mental health at the school. The school has teamed up with Mayo Sports Partnership, Croí, Soroptimist Castlebar and the HSE to promote more awareness and action for a healthier school. Davitt College is now a ‘Health Promoting School’ and has appointed a dedicated committee to work on the project.

Claremorris woman wins €16,000 in Money Spinner game

The National Lottery’s fourth Money Spinner event presented by Brian Ormond, took place at Breaffy House, Castlebar, Co Mayo, last Saturday night. Five players from Donegal, Galway, Carlow, Mayo, and Kildare won prizes to the value of €95,000. The biggest winner on the day was Damian Timoney from Donegal who won prizes to the value of €35,000. Dorothy Campbell from Claremorris won €16,000, including a shopping spree, at the National Lottery’s Money Spinner event held at Breaffy House, Castlebar on last Saturday evening.

New book celebrates the history and genealogy of Partry

The book, Partry People of Co Mayo Family Histories 1856 and Beyond is a comprehensive historical record of the people of Partry, Parish of Ballyovey, and will be officially launched in Partry on August 29.

Irish Association of Supported Employment in Erris allocated €180,000

The Minister for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring was this week informed by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan, that €180,000 has been allocated to the Irish Association of Supported Employment over a period of two years. Minister Ring said; “This funding allocation will secure the future of this organisation in Erris for the next two years. Sarah Togher, national co-ordinator of the IASE, and her team have been working extremely hard with people with disabilities to get them in to the workplace and continue to support them. They are also involved in numerous other initiatives.” Ring continued saying; “Cllr Gerry Coyle has made strong representations to me in respect of the IASE and the invaluable work which they carry out. I am delighted that this level of funding has been secured for them today which will enable them to continue to secure employment for people and to carry out the wonderful service which they provide.”

Achill’s German connection highlighted

Achill Island has been included on a new, downloadable app celebrating Ireland’s German connections. The island was included in the 20 locations highlighted across Ireland because of its link with Nobel laureate Heinrich Boll. The world renowned author spent alot of time on Achill, in his cottage in Dugort Village, and penned much of his work there, including his famous Irisches Tagebuch (Irish Journal).

Tribute to Florina Doyle

Talented Castlebar musician, the late Florina Doyle, will be remembered at a tribute concert in the Welcome Inn Hotel tonight as part of the Connacht Fleadh programme. The concert starts at 8.30 pm and will feature some of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians. Doors open at 8 pm and cead siteach is €10.
