Irish Heart Foundation seeks big-hearted volunteers in Mayo

Be a heart hero on Thursday May 5 and Friday May 6 by joining the Irish Heart Foundation in Mayo for this year’s Happy Heart Appeal sponsored by Abbott and volunteer a few hours of your time to sell Happy Heart pins on-street and raise much-needed funds.
Every day in Ireland 27 people are losing their lives to heart disease and stroke and some 300 new cases are diagnosed daily - yet 80 per cent of these deaths are completely preventable. “Prevention is crucial to stop this disease in its tracks and save lives,” is the message from Irish Heart Foundation medical director and cardiologist Dr Angie Brown ahead of this year’s Happy Heart Appeal.

The funeral of Ben Garrett from Kilknock, Breaffy, Castlebar will take place this evening and tomorrow. Ben whose remains were found in Galway on Sunday after a search that had lasted over two weeks, was a Private in the Defence Forces.

With the general election out of the way for now, councillors in Mayo have called for the decision that saw 10,000 Mayo people being subsumed into the Galway West constituency to be reversed ahead of the next time that the voters go to the polls in a general election. Fine Gael Cllr Patsy O'Brien tabled a motion at the April meeting of the local authority calling to reinstate Mayo as a five seat constituency after the completion of the census at the end of the month.

Flood relief work that is needed to ensure that Crossmolina does not face the same fate as it did last winter could be years off, according to some local councillors, following a presentation of potential solutions to the issue. Last Friday the OPW presented a number of options to help stop the flooding from the Deel which saw the town submerged earlier this year, but it could be several years before effective measures are completed.

Some progress has been made in relation to the future of Westport House, but it could be a number of months before the historic house and estate's future is known. Independent councillor Christy Hyland raised the issue of the house at the April meeting of Mayo County Council this week. Chief executive of Mayo County Council, Peter Hynes, responded to Cllr Hyland saying: "In relation to Westport House, a bit of progress is being made, I can't say any more."

The organisational structure of the senior management of Mayo County Council was raised once again this week by the elected members of the council at their April meeting. Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly questioned what would happen once the current director of services, Paddy Mahon, left the organisation to take up the role as the chief executive of Longford County Council in the near future. Cllr Munnelly said he hoped that each of the four municipal districts would retain a director of services over each area. This view was backed up by councillors of every political hue in the chamber, with Independent councillor Seamus Weir proposing a motion that each municipal district retain a director of services, which was seconded by Cllr Frank Durcan.
