Councillors annoyed about changes in management roles

There was anger among the elected members of the West Mayo Municipal District this week when it emerged that a senior member of the council's management team in the area was to be moved to a new position in the council, and the councillors had not been told officially of the change. The Mayo Advertiser understands that on Wednesday night a meeting of councillors from across the county took place, which was attended by 70 per cent of the elected councillors and they made a decision to request the holding of a special meeting of the council to discuss issues such as this.

The cathaoirleach of the district, Cllr Christy Hyland, said that it had not been communicated through official channels that Martin Keating, who had previously worked as the acting director of services for the area, would be moving to the council's environment section. There has been a long running issue with the councillors and the council management over the appointment of senior officials to positions in the county, with the councillors looking for a director of services in the council to be maintained in each of the four Municipal Districts in the county.

Animal rights group to protest next council meeting

A Mayo based animal rights group, People Against Cruelty to Animals (PACA) is planning a protest outside the Mayo County Council offices in Castlebar on Monday May 9 at 3pm. The protest will coincide with the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council. The group intends to highlight the practice of animal testing at the Charles Rivers laboratories, Bellagelly South, Glenamoy, Ballina. The group has contacted all 30 county councillors and the board members of Mayo County Council via email asking to have the licence for the premises revoked.

An acre of trees planted by Mayo schools as part of Tree Walk

John Crossan and fellow tree walkers walked from Achill to Westport planting native trees in schools along the way. The Tree Walk has been visiting schools for the last 20 years but this was its first visit to south and west Mayo. John Crossan began the Tree Walk as a way of introducing today’s youth to trees, their history, importance, songs and stories, and giving each pupil a tree to plant and grow.

Ballyhaunis ready for Operation Transformation to paint the town

Over the past number of weeks the business people, voluntary groups, and clubs of Ballyhaunis have gathered together to form Ballyhaunis/GoBallyhaunis. Like every other rural town which has been affected by the economic downturn and the scars that it has left behind, the organising committee is eager to promote all that is good about Ballyhaunis. The first step was to create an umbrella brand under which they could organise themselves. They have done this with a very simple variation of the name Ballyhaunis incorporating the town colours red and black and a heart.

The grouping immediately arranged via social media to promote the Ballyhaunis brand and in the process support each other in business, sport, and voluntary causes. There has been an enormously positive uptake in the town to the project and there is a new found sense of identity. The group has more than 50 businesses and town groupings row in behind the brand and participated by having pictures taken supporting the project. The brand has been seen in Times Square, New York, at Sydney Harbour Bridge, and at the World Cup of Racing in Dubai. Irish TV has been to town to film the project in operation. Members of the Ballyhaunis diaspora in America have reached out and we are expecting the project to be mentioned in an interview with a Ballyhaunis ex-pat in The New York Times shortly.

Martin Sheridan Bursary awards handed out

The 2015 Martin Sheridan Bursary awards were presented by the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Michael Holmes, to the recipients recently at the Martin Sheridan Memorial Community Centre. Now in its third year, the awards are for sports people who have excellent potential, outstanding ability, and the desire to perform at the highest level possible in their chosen sport and have the potential to bring recognition and success at national and international level to Mayo. The awards are designed to assist in the cost of education, training, travel, and equipment.

Anne Marie Gibbons to perform in Knock

Mezzo Soprano Anne Marie Gibbons, who is originally from Louisburgh will perform alongside the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the 120 member Peace Choir, on May 14 at 8pm in Knock Basilica. The performance will include the well known aria Vida Cor Meum as a duet with Tenor Owen Gilhooly.

The concert in Knock is one her many planned concert appearances in the months ahead which include Suziki (Madam Butterfly) at The National Concert Hall with the RTE Concert Orchestra, Mahler's 8th Symphony with the Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra and Prokofiev's Alexander Nevesky with RTE National Symphony Orchestra. Future operatic engagements include Camila in Thomas Ades' The Exterminating Angel and Auntie in Peter Grimes both for The Royal Orchestra in Convent Garden.
