Wild Atlantic Way needs special roads budget says councillor

By Colm Gannon

A Fine Gael county councillor has called for a special heading to be included in the next roadworks scheme for Mayo to deal with road works and improvements on the Wild Atlantic Way in the county.

Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly brought up the idea at the April meeting of the council this week when he said he wanted to see Mayo be able to make the most of the wonderful resource that it has, being located right in the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way. "It's a wonderful resource we have that hugs the entire coastline of the county, but we don't fund the roadworks outside of the normal allocation. We need to look at doing this for next year so we don't lose out on people coming through Mayo on the Wild Atlantic Way and skipping parts because the road isn't in good condition."

Independent councillor Christy Hyland supported Cllr Munnelly's request and told the meeting he met someone who had rented a car to drive the Wild Atlantic Way, but had decided to abandon the trip around the coastline, because the car he had rented had got scratched on the roads on the route and he was worried he would lose his deposit from the rental company.
