A large crowd gathered in the Ballina Manor Hotel, Mayo, as Pieta House launched Mayo’s Darkness Into Light 2016 (DIL 2016) series of events in association with Electric Ireland. Joan Freeman, founder of Pieta House, was joined by Kevin Molloy from Electric Ireland, former Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh, along with members of local organisations and volunteers from across the county to launch DIL which is now in its eighth year.

A fascinating exhibition on the women who fought for Irish independence has just been launched in Castlebar Library. The exhibition, highlights as it says “What did the women do?” through the stories of Cumann na mBan and the role of women in the cultural, literary, and ultimately political revival of the decade from 1912 to 1922.

Castlebar trialogue meeting
Trialogue is an open forum for discussion on mental health issues. Users of the mental health services, carers, health care professionals, their friends and everyone in the community are welcome. A trialogue group is a neutral space where communities can gather to develop their understanding of mental health issues, the challenges of maintaining mental health and to transform thinking on developing better services and healthy communities. The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 7pm in GMIT, Castlebar. The next meeting is on Tuesday April 12 in GMIT at 7pm, and is about self-awareness. Room number is expected to be P105 - it's up the main stairs.

A top class line up of female speakers will take pare in a a panel discussion in Castlebar in April inspired by the work of 1916 revolutionary, doctor and Mayo native, Dr Kathleen Lynn. Dr Lynn's legacy was the inspiration around a current arts project that is taking place in a number of locations around the county that was launched last Friday. The panel discussion exploring the position of women in today’s world titled 'How Is It for Women Now? takes place at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday April 14 at 8pm. The event is scheduled as part of the extremely successful Kathleen Lynn: Insider on the Outside exhibition, currently running in five visual arts spaces in Mayo. Discussing the subject will be Sarah Durcan, Catherine Marshall, Sinead McCoole, Michelle Browne, and some other guests.

This event which is hosted every two years by one of the Mayo Associations globally provides the network of associations scattered across the globe an opportunity to connect, network and strengthen ties with each other. The convention will ensure the associations continue to remain strong, vibrant, and purposeful at a time when more and more Mayo people are emigrating and building roots away from their home county and in need of support from the Mayo diaspora. The Association will officially launch the world convention for 2016 at Knock Airport this evening, Friday April 1 at 7.30 pm. Lifeboat crews from Achill RNLI and Ballyglass RNLI took part in the Easter Sunday 1916 centenary commemoration which saw some 700 members of the Irish emergency services taking part in the State parade. Ballyglass RNLI coxswain John Walsh and Achill RNLI second coxswain Dave Curtis joined 50 of the charity’s volunteers and staff who came from lifeboat stations around the Irish coast and inland to parade through Dublin city centre to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising. Dave Curtis carried the RNLI’s flag for the charity in the parade.

On Easter Monday, a large contingent of walkers and history enthusiasts departed from Newport to follow in the footsteps of Michael Kilroy's flying column, who during the War of Indepdence escaped through the mountains and countryside of Newport following an ambush in Kilmeena. The day started in upper Skirdagh where Niamh Chambers read the Proclamation followed by Billy Chambers' account of the West Mayo Flying Column. Then it was on to the now ruins of what was in their day the safe houses, where Michael Kilroy's men rested after the Kilmeanna ambush. Here Patrick Carey told the group about the people who once lived here and the men they looked after.

Mayo will celebrate the centenary of the 1916 rising on Sunday, May 1 when Castlebar hosts a 1916 county parade and family fun day, which is being backed by Mayo County Council. The County Mayo 1916 commemoration parade and Family fun day, provides a great opportunity for communities and groups from all across Mayo to get involved.
All community groups who have a 1916 themed float are invited to take part in the parade, as are marching bands, and any other creative ideas from community groups to make this event really memorable. Groups wishing to take part in the parade should contact the co-ordinator of the parade, Mick Baynes on [email protected] for full details regarding the parade and the wider activities that will take place on the day.
