Kenny praises Quinn as he lays foundation stone

An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, laid the foundation stone for the new swimming pool complex and outdoor education centre in Castlebar at Lough Lannagh on Monday afternoon. The Taoiseach said that this was a "great day" for Castlebar, and after he laid the stone he praised Castlebar swimmer Nicholas Quinn who is preparing to represent Ireland at the Olympics in Rio and said he hoped to see more Castlebar athletes following in his footsteps.

Low lying fruit' when it comes to estate take over is coming to an end

There was a broad welcome from the elected members of the Ballina Municipal District this week with the news that 18 estates in the district were about to be taken in charge by the council, however there was a warning from some councillors that there are still plenty of estates in the district that will need major investment before they can be taken over.

Ballyhaunis man charged in relation to infant son's death

A Ballyhaunis man charged with the manslaughter of his infant son three years ago was released on bail, following payment of a €2,000 independent surety on Wednesday. John Tighe, with an address at Lavallyroe, Ballyhaunis, had initially appeared at Castlebar District Court on Tuesday, but was detained in Castlebar Garda Station overnight on Tuesday pending the payment and approval of the independent surety by the court.

IWAK sees nine per cent increase of passengers in first quarter

Ireland West Airport recorded a nine per cent increase in passenger numbers in the first quarter of 2016 with some 123,000 passengers using the airport in the first three months of the year. The airport is on track to record the busiest year in its 30 year history, with passenger numbers set to soar to close to 750,000 this year.

Gear up for Explore Mayo Cycle this June

Summer is here and it is time to dust down your bike if you have not already done so. Mayo is fast becoming one of the leading counties in Ireland for cycling. Already leading the way with lovely cycling greenways and scenery, it now has some of the top sportive cycles.

This is the fourth year of the Explore Mayo Cycle and this year there are three routes to suit all levels of cyclists. The 50km route is geared towards the beginner from Castlebar to Partry where refreshments will be served. The 100km route is more suitable for intermediate level cyclists and takes in the beautiful countryside of Tourmakeady, Finney, Clonbur/Cong, and back through Ballinrobe. The third and final route is 150km and passes through the picturesque village of Lecanvey (via Westport), Louisburgh, Delphi, Leenane, and then joins up with the 100km route.

Mayo Volunteer Centre is encouraging charities to embrace new kinds of volunteers

ayo Volunteer Centre is encouraging not for profit organisations to increase their understanding of new ways of volunteering – as National Volunteering Week comes to an end this Sunday, May 22. The importance of volunteers was highlighted in a new survey of 400 volunteer involving organisations carried out by Volunteer Ireland and the network of Volunteer Centres. The survey found that 53 per cent of organisations that involve volunteers said they could not survive without them.

Opening the door to Irish speakers in Castlebar

Gnó Mhaigh Eo, in association with Conradh na Gaeilge, is launching a scheme in Caisleán an Bharraigh this summer that will see businesses in the town offer its services ‘as Gaeilge’ to those who wish to use their cúpla focal on a regular basis. The scheme is being launched following the great success of its implementation in Claremorris, with Ballina and Westport earmarked to introduce the scheme in the near future.

Thousands to descend on Féile na Tuaithe

Féile na Tuaithe, which takes place Turlough Park, is one of the biggest free family festivals in the west and it returns to the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life outside Castlebar on Saturday May 21 and Sunday May 22 from 12 noon to 5pm both days. Entry and car parking are free of charge and bumper crowds of up to 30,000 are expected over the two day event. All elements in Féile have a direct connection with the exhibitions within the museum itself which showcases traditional country life since the 19th century.

Six men arrested in Ballyhaunis this morning

Six men have been arrested this morning in Ballyhaunis following an number of incidents in the east Mayo town. There were up to 40 Gardai on duty in the town including members of the Armed Response Unit, while a funeral took place this morning.
