Mayo will take in 86 Syrian refugees this year, the members of Mayo County Council were informed this week. Síofra Kilcullen who is the chair of the newly established Mayo Interagency Resettlement Committee told the elected members of the plans. She told the meeting that Mayo is one of eight counties across the country which will be taking part in the resettlement programme.
The 86 refugees will be made up of 20 different families, 50 per cent of those who will be arriving being children, they will be located in three locations in the county in Castlebar, Westport, and Claremorris after spending six to eight weeks in a registeration centre before being homed in Mayo.

The ongoing row between elected members of Mayo County Council and the chief executive of the organisation over the roles of senior management looks to have been solved. At the May monthly meeting of the local authority there had been an item placed on the agenda to call for a special meeting of the council to be held to discuss the concerns of the council.

Reports from the United States this week have suggested that United States vice president Joe Biden will be making a trip to Ireland later this summer with Mayo one of his destinations. The Irish Central news website, has reported that the vice president will be making a four day trip to Ireland with a visit to Mayo penciled in on this trip.

Three sudden deaths that occurred in Mayo in the last week are currently under investigation. The three deaths happened in Ballina, Swinford, and Westport. On Sunday afternoon last, May 8, a fatal traffic collision took place at Ballinahaglish on the N26 Ballina to Foxford road where a male motorcyclist lost his life following a collision with a van at 3.45pm. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem was carried out. A man was arrested by gardai following the incident and questioned in Ballina Garda Station before being released without charge on Monday, with a file being prepared for the DPP.

Féile na Tuaithe, which takes place Turlough Park, is one of the biggest free family festivals in the west and it returns to the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life outside Castlebar on Saturday May 21 and Sunday May 22 from 12 noon to 5pm both days. Entry and car parking are free of charge and bumper crowds of up to 30,000 are expected over the two day event. All elements in Féile have a direct connection with the exhibitions within the museum itself which showcases traditional country life since the 19th century.

The Mayo International Choral Festival have announced that the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins and Mrs Sabina Higgins will attend as guests of honour at the Concert For Peace in Knock Basilica on Saturday May 14 which will commemorate the 1916 Rising and World War I. The unprecedented scale of such a concert in this venue will see close to 200 artists perform on the night, all presented by lauded broadcaster, RTÉ Lyric FM’s Liz Nolan. Conductor extraordinaire David Brophy of RTÉ’s award winning High Hopes Choir and instrumental fame brings his impressive experience to proceedings, conducting this special event.

The latest quarterly rental report by property website Daft.ie has reported that rents in Mayo have risen by 3.6 per cent in the first three months of the year compared to the rents that were being paid in the first three months of 2015. Nationally rents have risen by two per cent compared to the same three month period of last year.

Almost 200 schoolchildren will pedal their way through the streets of Castlebar on Thursday next May 19 in a novel road safety campaign. Specially trained Garda cyclists and cycle instructors will pass on road safety skills that could help to keep the children safe and alive on the nation's roads.
