Two men in court in relation to recent Ballina burglaries

Two men appeared in court in Ballina this week after being charged by gardaí in relation to a number of break-ins in the town in the recent past.

Both Gerry Foody, 68 Greenhills, Ballina, and Tommy McLellan, 89 Bar na Dearg, Ballina, were remanded on their own bail to appear in court again on September 14. Both men agreed to a number of strict bail conditions including signing on daily at Ballina Garda station between 9am and 9pm, abiding by a curfew between 10pm and 9am, and abstaining from alcohol and drugs during their period of bail. Gardaí were given liberty to re-enter the charges at 24 hours’ notice if either of the men broke the conditions of their bail.

Extra Westport-Dublin train carriages welcomed

The decision by Irish Rail to increase the number of carriages on the 13.15pm train between Westport and Dublin has been welcomed by Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony.

Dep O’Mahony, who has made representation to Irish Rail in relation to overcrowding on the Westport–Dublin line, said the decision by the company will make travelling between Mayo and Dublin a more comfortable experience than was previously the case.

Five times more grant aid for Mayo IDA parks

The regional manager of the IDA, Jim Murrin, has revealed that the authority will offer investors five times more grant aid to locate in Mayo than in Dublin. However population and infrastructural deficiencies have hampered their efforts to strike deals with investors who show an interest in the west of Ireland, he told Castlebar Labour councillor Harry Barrett following a meeting to discuss the state of the IDA industrial park on the Breaffy Road, and the failure of the IDA to attract industry to the Castlebar area.

Remand for youth who robbed nun

A 16-year-old youth from Tallaght, Co Dublin living with his extended family in the Castlebar area was remanded to St Patrick’s Institution this week by Judge Conal Gibbons after he pleaded guilty to theft from a 75-year-old nun in Castlebar.

Injuries board made awards to children from Mayo

The annual report from the Injuries Board shows that 26 children from Mayo received compensation awards throughout 2009. The board is the independent Government body which assesses the amount of compensation due to a person who has suffered a personal injury as victims of motor, workplace, and public place accidents.

Pakistan relief collection to aid survivors

A national collection will be held this weekend August 21 and 22 in Catholic churches across Ireland in aid of survivors of Pakistan's devastating floods. Bishop John Kirby, Bishop of Clonfert and chairman of Trócaire, is urging Irish parishioners to support collections in their local parishes to help Pakistani people cope with the worst flooding in the history of the state. Trócaire is the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland.
