Famine exhibition at Castlebar Library

As part of the national Famine commemoration, Mayo County Library has produced an exhibition of this tragic period of Irish history. The Great Famine was one of the defining periods of Irish history. It marked a watershed in the history of the country, causing a change so complete in the Irish social and economic fabric that the people’s sensibilities would never be the same again. The Famine in Mayo is an exhibition which provides a vivid portrait of the lives and deaths of the people as recorded by witnesses in books, newspapers and official records of the time. It covers all aspects of the tragedy from the initial crop failure, to evictions, emigration, workhouses and relief measures. The exhibition will be on display in the Castlebar Library during August and September.

Threatened HSE cutbacks would decimate Mayo health services

Severe job losses and a decimated health service in the region is a possibility if newly threatened HSE cutbacks in Mayo go ahead. In the whole HSE West region, 1,000 people could lose their jobs, with 300 people on temporary contracts in the county to potentially lose their jobs if a report, compiled by a consultancy firm, is implemented.

‘Get Out There’ adventure festival opens in Westport

A unique, free festival takes place throughout Westport next week as everyone is encouraged to ‘Get Out There’ and try a different sport or activity in a series of adventure points which will be scattered throughout the town from August 19 to 22.

Adventure activities on offer, free of charge, include archery, BMX biking, kayaking, kite surfing, scuba diving, sailing, and street orienteering. The festival will culminate in a family fun day filled with activities supported by local sports clubs and co-ordinated by the Mayo Sports Partnership.

Stranded dolphin rescued in Killala

A dolphin was rescued after it got stranded in the Palmerstown Estuary at Cortoon, Killala, last Monday, August 9. The dolphin was released successfully at Lacken Pier following the assistance of a number of people.
