Mayor welcomes students to Castlebar

The Mayor of Castlebar Councillor Ger Deere has embarked on a visit of the three secondary schools in Castlebar over the next few days to formally welcome the hundreds of first year students who will be starting their post primary studies in the county town.

“I think that it is appropriate that the mayor welcomes all first year students, as after all they will be part of the community for the next six years,” Cllr Deere said.

Club Mantra reopens with a bang

Club Mantra Castlebar will reopen its doors this Saturday August 28 to reveal a newly renovated nightclub. A new state of the art smoking area with access to the top bar is the most substantial change to the nightclub, though renovations also include a new decor incorporating new flooring and seating which have transformed the club into a brighter, more open space. To celebrate the club’s new look and reopening, the price of admission for the night has been cut to only €5, with plenty of promotional offers also available on the night as Mantra’s way of welcoming customers to its new home. One millionth visitor for museum

The National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, which is located in Turlough, is expecting to welcome its one millionth visitor towards the end of next week. The museum had expected the millionth visitor to pass through its doors in late September or early October, however there was an exceptionally strong performance in visitor numbers this year.

Axe to fall on 150 temporary jobs at Mayo General Hospital

Members of staff at Mayo General Hospital were informed on Tuesday last that 150 temporary workers are to lose their jobs from September 1 next. Devastated employees are now set to be forced on to the dole queues while services at the hospital are sure to come under considerable strain.

Parents admit kids are skipping meals

Fifty-six per cent of Irish parents admit that their children skip meals and the likelihood is much higher among teenagers, a new survey by Kellogg’s has found, with over two thirds of parents with a child in secondary school admitting the problem as against 46 per cent of parents of primary school children.
