Polish man sentenced in his absence for damage to Ballina hotel

A Polish man, Daniel Novac, 77 Oakfield Park, Sligo, who caused damage to a hotel bedroom and threatened a member of staff was given a three-month sentence for public order offences and a one-month sentence for criminal damage to run consecutively in his absence at Ballina District Court.

Lack of funding to meet housing grant applications

Members of the Westport electoral area committee were this week informed that there was not enough funding to meet this year’s Housing Aid for Older People Scheme due to inadequate funding received from the Government.

Senior executive officer Martin Keating explained that €3.8 million was the expected grant aid which was to have been given to the county for 2008 but it has fallen “far short of this at €2.4 million”. The housing officer said that as expenditure on previous years’ grant applications are running at a high cost level was deemed that the distribution of payments for new grant applications would not be viable.

Mayo tourism grants unveiled

The Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Martin Cullen TD, has announced that funding of up to €4,329,125 has been allocated under Fáilte Ireland's Tourism Infrastructure Fund to 27 tourism projects around the country. This allocation of funding is in addition to over €18 million in Tourism Infrastructure Fund grants already announced. The details of funding for Mayo projects have been outlined and include cycle routes, walking routes and facility improvements at Croagh Patrick and the National Famine Monument.
