According to the 2007 Courts Service Report, which examined statistics from the Castlebar and Ballina District Court Offices, 3,623 public order, drugs, larceny, sexual offences and road traffic cases were brought before the district courts in Mayo—13 more cases than in 2006.

Traffic ignoring one-way system on Rush Street, Kenny warns

Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD has warned of the dangerous traffic conditions being presented by some users of Rush Street in Castlebar. Over the past few weeks, a greater number of drivers are ignoring the one-way system that is in place on the street, he has observed. As a result, cars are driving directly through the traffic light junction between Linenhall Street and Lucan Street.

Mayo PhD student wins prestigious award at Switzerland conference

NUI Galway PhD student Ruairi Nestor, from Ballyglass, Co Mayo, has won a prestigious international award at a conference in Lausanne, Switzerland. Ruairi received the Libersky Prize for the best research paper by a student at the 2008 SPHERIC International Workshop, for his work in the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

The Minister, accompanied by Beverley Flynn TD, welcomed performers from Uist in Scotland and the Isle of Man, together with participants from every island off the west coast.

Call for telemedicine facilities for island communities

A Dáil Deputy has sought an update on the provision of telemedicine facilities for island communities as outlined in the Programme for Government. The Fine Gael spokesperson on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Deputy Michael Ring, said the proposal was to provide telemedicine facilities to allow Ireland's most remote island communities and medical practitioners access to doctors and consultants in specialist hospitals.
