Turning back the Westport clock for heritage day

The famous Westport clock will be turned back on August 10 as the “Cathair of the beeves” hosts a novel and unique heritage day as part of the Westport Music Festival.

Currach making, sean nós singing, butter churning, treasure hunting, sheep shearing, turf cutting and barrel dancing are all to feature as the town turns back the clock to appreciate past cultures and traditions. The heritage day on August 10 along the Mall river is being organised by Gnó Mhaigh Eo and the Westport Music Festival committee.

The Westport Heritage Day Lá Oidhreachta Chathair na Mart will attract visitors and tourists from all over the region to the town: phenomenal interest has been shown in such events in recent years.

There will be demonstrations, workshops and exhibitions at several stalls on the day with plenty of poetry, singing and live music all day long. The heritage committee have also promised traditional currach displays, vintage cars, art and crafts and even a revival of some old school yard games like hopscotch, marbles and conkers.

It is also hoped that old artefacts and pictures from around Westport will be on display as locals dig into their treasure chests and join the fun on the day. Anyone interested in taking part in the heritage day is invited to contact Gnó Mhaigh Eo at 098 26555 for a permit for the day.
