Three injured in collision
Three people were injured in a road crash in Westport on Tuesday night. The collision happened at the junction of the Leenane road and the Quay road near the town, shortly before 9.30pm. The emergency services were called to the scene and two males and female were taken to Mayo General Hospital, none of the three are believed to be seriously injured.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD has been contacted by a number of homeowners in the Castlebar area who have had double yellow lines painted on the road outside their houses within the past few months. It has become an inconvenience to some homeowners, in one particular case; an elderly person has had to pay two parking fines because the person who mows her lawn has to park outside her house.

Aer Arann recommence flights on Knock-Dublin route

Aer Arann—Ireland’s regional airline—re-launched its daily return flights from Ireland West Airport Knock to Dublin on Wednesday, with an early morning flight and return evening flight available on the Public Service Obligation (PSO) service.

Speaking at Ireland West Knock having arrived on the first evening flight from Dublin, Aer Arann Commercial Director Fergal Barry expressed the airline’s delight with the resumption of the PSO route to Dublin. “When we took over this route three years ago we worked to build it up and as a consequence we developed a very loyal customer base in the area—we were very disappointed not to be awarded the route in the recent Government tender, but we are delighted that as the second ranked bidder in the tender process we have now been awarded the route and we aim to re-establish ourselves quickly by offering a quality service and low fares.”

Inquest into woman’s death after childbirth adjourned for expert advice

The inquest into the death of Evelyn Flanagan, Hollyhill, Ballyheane, Castlebar was adjourned on Wednesday evening (September 24) by Coroner for South Mayo, John O’Dwyer, until December 1. The coroner adjourned the inquest after three days following an application by Mr John Jordan, legal representative for the deceased’s husband Mr Padraig Flanagan to retain expert independent evidence from an expert on amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), which, according to the pathologist for Mayo General Hospital Dr Fandel Bennani, was what led to Mrs Flanagan death.

Removal of cancer services imminent

Surgical and diagnostic breast cancer services at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar will be transferred to Galway in a few weeks, a meeting of the HSE West forum were told this week. Initially the services were to be moved in September, then the HSE said it would be December but now confirmation has been given that Mayo patients will start attending the centre of excellence in Galway in a few weeks. However no definitive date has been given for the move.

Alan Moran, network manager of acute hospitals in the west, made the announcement at Tuesday’s HSE West forum meeting, adding that once the service is working properly a similar model will be discussed for Sligo.
