Green Schools travel initiative launched at Scoil Raifteirí

Scoil Raifteirí in Castlebar along with 19 other Mayo schools are in the throes of preparing to receive their fourth green flags. The latest addition to the Green Flag project is the Green Schools travel initiative which was piloted in the east and is being rolled out in Mayo for the first time to 20 schools who have already received the first three green flags.

Westport to host Turas na mBan

The town of Westport is to host Turas na mBan, a weekend dedicated to celebrating the journey of women, which takes place in the Knockranny House Hotel on Friday and Saturday October 17 and 18. This is the third successive year of this event, and on Friday evening the proceedings will get under way with music, dancing, singing, wine tasting, and oysters.

President praises community effort in Newport

The presidential motorcade was greeted by hundreds of flag waving children from the Holy Family National School last Tuesday morning in Newport as it turned up towards Cuan Modh Day Care. After passing under a banner that traversed the Main Street welcoming the President to the town, showcasing the pride the town had in welcoming Ireland’s first citizen to their town. The community sprit that was shown by the locals was echoed and welcomed by President McAleese when she spoke at the official opening of the centre, where she remarked on the hard work and commitment put in by all the locality in getting the centre off the ground from an idea to the facility it is today.

Foxford musician wins major All-Ireland title

Foxford man Stephen Doherty (19), son of Tommy and Christina Doherty, Currinara, Foxford, was awarded first place in the senior All–Ireland wooden flute competition and second place in the melodeon category at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, which was held in Tullamore, County Offaly, recently.

Control of River Moy harbour transferred to Mayo County Council

The responsibility for the control and operation of the River Moy harbour in Ballina has been formally transferred from the harbour authority to Mayo County Council, announced Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary.

The transfer of power to the county council is in keeping with Government policy for non-commercial regional ports.

Celebration and commemoration as Peace Park is opened

Years of hard work and determination were recognised earlier this week when President of Ireland Mary McAleese officially opened the Mayo Peace Park and laid the first wreath to remember Mayo's fallen in wars across the globe. Tuesday's ceremony was the culmination of over nine years of work by chairman of the Mayo Peace Park committee Michael Feeney. From what started as a letter to a newspaper and on to a war remembrance Mass in 1999, nine years of work by Mr Feeney and his committee culminated with the official opening this week.
