Gamblers place bets on tomorrow’s predicted appearance of the Virgin Mary at Knock

Thousands of people flocked to Knock Shrine on Sunday October 11 after a Dublin clairvoyant predicted that the Virgin Mary would appear. Some claimed they saw the “sun dancing” or changing colour. However ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday) next predicted ‘apparition’, the Archbishop of Tuam Michael Neary has sought to distance the Catholic Church from the event. He said recent events at Knock Shrine, where members of the public believed the Virgin Mary appeared, are to be regretted rather than encouraged.

Ballina Arts centre redevelopment

The redevelopment of Ballina Arts Centre launched The Final Push programme last Wednesday. The new state of the art, centre for Ballina has got funding from various sources and those behind the project launched The Final Push in Murphy’s Longnecks during the week. The campaign needs to raise €500,000 locally for the project and they are asking for local support for it. Light sculpture event

The HSE Rural Training Centre in Castlebar is teaming up with Linenhall Arts Centre and the Mayo Arts Squad to present a light sculpture arts event entitled The Magician’s Garden at the centre on Friday October 23 at 7.30pm. Also performing on the night will be the Crimlin Bata Fada Band, playing a mixture of samba, drums, and pipes music. The event is open to all and is free of charge. Tea and coffee will be served.

The three chords of easy listening
Well the leaves are falling once again and as I watch them fall outside the window my thoughts turn to all the other years I have watched the same event. A year has passed since I last witnessed this scene and with the winter chill making itself felt once more I wonder how much has changed in any of our lives since this time last year. Yes loads of changes have happened around us but are we more or less the same as we were this time last year: thinking and worrying about the same things, doing the same things and talking about the same things. Did we learn anything at all about ourselves this past year or did we spend our time caught up in celebrity and TV lives when we weren’t doing our best to earn money for food and shelter and look after kids.
