Mother found in possession of speed worth €1,000

A 28-year-old Lithuanian who was found with over €1,000 worth of amphetamines, in a house where she resides with her step-sister (18) and six-year-old son, was before Castlebar District Court this week charged with section three (possession) and section 15 (for having drugs for sale and supply) under the misuse of drugs act.

Masked men stole mobiles from Claremorris store

Fifty mobile phones were stolen in a raid on a the Vodafone shop in Claremorris. Two masked men entered the store at 3.30am on Thursday October 22.

On Saturday October 17 Balla Mart held its usual cattle sale. There were 1,100 cattle on offer sold in three rings. There was a good trade and on average prices were similar to last week with more farmers buying.

Claremorris woman who forgot to get insurance escapes driving ban

A Claremorris woman who forgot to pay her insurance escaped a driving ban at Claremorris District Court this week. Mary Wolley, Castlemcgarrett, Claremorris pleaded guilty in court to the charges of having no insurance, and failure to produce insurance and her driving licence. The court was told by Garda Catherine Hoban that she spoke to Wolley at the scene of an accident on the Cloonfad Road, Claremorris on February 28 2009 and demanded the production of her driving licence and insurance within 10 days, which she failed to do.

Fine for German woman convicted of illegal dumping

A German woman who was living in Ballyhaunis was convicted of illegal dumping on a site at Clare, Claremorris, which had 70 tonnes of waste and cost Mayo County Council €10,650 to clean up. The woman was fined €1,000 plus €750 costs at Claremorris District Court this week.

Mass employment for region from Belmullet wave energy centre

An investment by the Government in Ireland’s ocean energy development, through IDA Ireland, was announced this week, with significant research and development work to be undertaken at the national wave energy test site at Belmullet. If planning is obtained for the research site at Belmullet this will lead to the creation in the long term of between “500 and 600 jobs” through the harnessing of “unrivalled” wave power and the possibility that Ireland would become a lead exporter of large quantities of green electricity.
