Union secures stay on AVIVA redundancies

The UNITE trade union and management at Aviva agreed this week that no redundancy notices will be served to any staff in Ireland until the final outline of the proposed company restructuring is clear. There are currently five people employed in the Castlebar branch of AVIVA.

Child abuse claims against eighteen priests in Tuam archdiocese, audit reveals

Allegations of child sexual abuse were made against 18 priests in the Tuam archdiocese from 1975 to 2011, according to the Review of Safeguarding Practice in the archdiocese, just published. Ten of these priests were deceased when the review was undertaken in June 2011.

Man stabbed in face in Castlebar

A local man received stab wounds to his cheek after he was assaulted in Castlebar on Monday night. Three other separate incidents also occurred in the Castlebar area on the same night, two cars were burnt out and destroyed and criminal damage was caused to a house in the town centre.

Ryan proposes radical changes to Septic Tank Bill

Fianna Fáil is seeking an urgent meeting between Mayo County Council and the Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan to discuss his plans to hit septic tank owners in Co Mayo with multiple fees from next year. The Fianna Fáil members of Mayo County Council are to bring forward a motion calling for radical changes to the Water Services (Amendment) Bill, with a view to introducing a much fairer system of registering and upgrading septic tanks in Mayo.
