Higgins welcomes €229 million EU awareness programme

North West MEP Jim Higgins has welcomed a new €229 million ‘Europe for Citizens’ programme designed to increase awareness and citizens' understanding of the EU, its values and history, but is urging the European Commission to prioritise rural regions of Ireland when rolling out the project.

The new year brings a new set of figures for the elected members of Mayo County Council to agree on for the coming year. The annual budget meeting of the council takes place today (Friday, January 6) at 11am in Áras an Chontae, Castlebar. This year’s budget as presented by the council officials shows an expected reduction in expenditure of €1,699,697 on the same time last year. The overall budgeted expenditure for the year is €130,252,752 down from €131,952,449 at the same stage in 2011.

As part of this year’s budget for Castlebar Town Council, due to be agreed by members, more than €200,000 is to be allocated to road improvements in the town with a total of 16 different projects identified for work over the next 12 months.
These projects include €12,000 for road surfacing at Rathbawn Drive and €28,000 for footpaths and road surfacing at Turlough Road. There will be €19,000 spent on similar works at Chestnut Grove, €16,000 on the Moneen Road, while Pound Road/Church View Villas, Garryduff Drive, Springfield Court, Hopkins Road, and Knockaphunta are to have road surfacing works carried out. Father Meehan Place will see improvement works carried out on stormwater drainage in the area, while Curradish Road will have €10,000 spent on stormwater draining and surfacing, with €14,500 for Lakeshore Drive footpath, drainage, and surfacing works this year - all subject to the approval of town council members next Tuesday (January 10) at the annual budget meeting.

Personal injury claimants will be better placed to avoid unnecessary legal fees following a recent move by the Central Bank to compel insurance companies to forward information about the Injuries Board to potential claimants as soon as they become aware of the potential claim. The move — which came into force on January 1 2012 — could result in savings of upwards of €2,000 per claim or up to €20 million per annum according to the Injuries Board.
