An Taoiseach Enda Kenny was announced as the Muintir Mhaigh Eo Mayo Person of the Year yesterdat at a reception in the Burlington Hotel in Dublin. The Muintir Mhaigheo Dublin Association has been running since 1905 and the Mayo Person of the Year has been awarded to a number of notable Mayo sons and daughters, including former president Mary Robinson and former taoiseach Charles J Haughey. Last year’s winner was Castlebar hotelier Pat Jennings.

A female shop assistant was subjected to a terrifying ordeal last Sunday night (January 15) at 9.40pm in the Top Oil Service Station, Ballina, after two masked raiders entered the premises and confronted the woman. One of the raiders was carrying a knife.

Mayo General Hospital has announced that the keys to the new permanently based MRI scanner were handed over to Mayo General Hospital by representatives of the fundraising groups at a ceremony at the hospital recently. The funding for the MRI scanner had been raised by a number of established cancer charities and the core groups involved were Cancer Action Mhaigh-Eo and the Bright Eyes Campaign.

It is unacceptable that more than 700 applicants for the Warmer Homes scheme are still waiting for the work to be carried out, according to Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway-Walsh.
Cllr Conway-Walsh stated: “Some of these applicants have been waiting since 2010 to have the insulation works done. I submitted a number of parliamentary questions regarding the waiting times for this scheme through Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley in the last month. Minister Phil Hogan has been asked to immediately allocate sufficient resources to both Clar ICH, Claremorris, and Mayo North East LEADER Partnership to enable them to continue with the work. These are the two community based organisations in Mayo contracted to implement the scheme in the county. I have further asked the Minister to allocate some of the outstanding works to contractors in local areas to clear the backlog and create local employment.
