Mid-April at least before septic tank registration system is launched

Last Friday saw the closure of the time for public consultation on the new septic tank guidelines. The consultation process looked for submissions from members of the public on the issue before the final guidelines were laid down. According to the Department of Environment, it doesn’t expect to have registration up and running until the middle of April at the earliest and from that launch the €5 registration fee will apply for three months. It did not close last week as was reported in an article in this paper in last Friday, March 30 edition.

Easter Sunday march in Castlebar for Addergoole Titanic ‘14’ commemoration

In April 1912 14 men and women from Addergoole in north Mayo set sail from Queenstown, Cork, for a new life in America. Within days, 11 had died in the icy waters of the north Atlantic. Their ship, Titanic, sank on her maiden voyage.

Shatter launches fresh attack on rural Garda stations—Calleary

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Justice, Dara Calleary has said that more Garda stations in Mayo could face closure in the next few months after the Justice Minister Alan Shatter launched a fresh attack on rural Garda stations. Minister Shatter has confirmed that the closure of Glenisland, Tourmakeady, Mulranny and Bellacorrick Garda Stations, along with dozens of others across the country, is just the beginning of a sustained attack on community policing.

Gardaí appeal to reduce forest fires in 2012

Under certain circumstances, and based mainly on tradition, the burning of land to clear scrub and other unwanted vegetation has become an accepted practice. Gardaí want to emphasise the threat that land and forest fires present to people’s lives and property. It is the responsibility of every member of the community, particularly those living near wooded areas, to comply with the legislation and undertake burning in a controlled manner. In addition, members of the community should make themselves aware of the necessary precautions relating to controlled burning by contacting the local fire services for advice or visit www.garda.ie

Any person intending to burn within one mile of a wooded area must inform their local Garda station in writing, no less than seven days in advance. Anyone who undertakes burning in such an area without notifying An Garda Síochána is committing an offence.

With this as our guiding principle, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has developed Draft National Standards for the Protection and Welfare of Children which set out the key attributes of an effective and safe child protection service. The setting of standards by HIQA and the monitoring of compliance with them are important levers in driving improvements in the effectiveness and safety of health and social care services for children and families.

Poitín drinker arrested in hospital for being threatening and abusive says ‘twas for the dog’

A man who drank some poitín, which he claims was in his house for a sick dog, and led to him being brought to Mayo General Hospital—accompanied by two ambulance staff and four gardaí— for being intoxicated, was before Castlebar District Court as he was threatening and abusive while at the hospital.
