Irish summer college in Castlebar offers one full scholarship

Coláiste Néifinn is a newly founded Irish summer college in Castlebar for 12 to 18-year-olds. This college aims to bring life to our native language outside the Gaeltacht. The co-ordinators are two local Irish teachers, assisted by experienced teachers from other schools. All teachers have taught in several Gaeltacht colleges, and bring a lot of experience to Coláiste Néifinn.

Closure order served on restaurant in Swinford

Arts Centre receives major funding blow

The Linenhall, Mayo’s oldest arts centre, has just received a major blow with the news that its funding from the Arts Council has been cut by 20 per cent for this year alone. Overall, the funding has been cut by 38 per cent in the last five years.

Over 11 per cent of Mayo’s Gaeltacht population speak Irish daily outside education

Irish is spoken on a daily basis outside of the education system by 24 per cent of the population in official Gaeltacht areas—11.1 per cent in Mayo—according to analysis of the census figures by statistician and language activist Donncha Ó hÉalaithe for RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

The cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Councillor Christy Hyland, members and management of Westport Town Council, would like to sincerely thank everybody who participated in the St Patrick’s Day Parade which was a tremendous success. Indeed the theme of the parade ‘Teamwork, Everyone’s a Winner’, in recognition of 2012 being designated as The International Year of The Co-operative, was really to the fore on the day.
