Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has demanded an explanation from the Education Minister Ruairí Quinn as to why disadvantaged schools in Mayo were left out of a review of DEIS cuts this year.

The future of Knockmore Post Office was not looking good according to Fine Gael councillor Seamus Weir this week. The Knockmore-based councillor informed the monthly meeting of the council on Monday that he had just come from a meeting with An Post in relation to the proposed closure of the post office in the village and it was not good news.

The framework agreement for the acquisition of property valuation and agronomy services by Mayo County Council - which stipulates that firms tendering for valuation work must have an annual turnover of €150,000 – was this week described by one councillor as “a joke”, and “uncompetitive” by another, in a heated debate on the framework at the April meeting of the local authority.

Mayo County Council has hit back at a report launched by An Taisce this week, which ranked Mayo as the fifth worst local authority in regard to planning decisions. Mayo County Council have also called for An Taisce’s position to be reviewed following the report’s publication, stating that “The report is a further indication of the urgent need to have the privileged position which An Taisce has enjoyed in the planning system reviewed as a matter of urgency.”
