Prefabs in Mayo schools to be replaced — Mulherin

Fine Gael TD for Mayo, Dep Michelle Mulherin, has welcomed the news that a number of Mayo schools have been given notice to proceed by the Department of Education and Skills to replace prefabs with permanent accommodation, including Behymore NS, Ballina; Scoil Cholmcille, Breaffy, Ballina; Cooneal NS, Ballina; SN Naomh Padraig, Currabaggan, Ballina; Richmond NS, Crossmolina; Ballyvary Central NS, Castlebar; SN Chomain Naofa, Roundfort; and Lankill NS, Liscarney.

Large turnout on Clare Island as early turn out low across rest of the county

The turnout in Mayo for polling on the Fiscal Compact Referendum was slow yesterday morning as drizzle replaced the sunshine the county had been used to in the previous week. However on Clare Island, where voting took place on Tuesday, the turnout was at 52 per cent according to the office of Fintan Murphy, the returning officer for Mayo.

Knockmore Fianna Fail express anger over post office closure

The recent closure of the Knockmore village post office was condemned at the May meeting of the Knockmore Area Fianna Fáil Cumann, with members criticising An Post for taking the decision to close the post office in an area with a population of over 4,000 people. The Government and the four sitting Mayo Fine Gael TDs were also charged with “standing idly by while the service was withdrawn”.

Mayo needs NAMA money for jobs — Barrett

Cllr Harry Barrett has questioned the recent announcement of a €2 billion investment by NAMA, which has pledged to spend the money on a variety of building projects around the country. The Labour councillor wants to see funds from NAMA spread around the country and invested instead in agriculture, fish farming, and renewable energy projects in Mayo and not on derelict sites in urban areas.
