RSA welcomes news that drivers involved in road accidents will be tested for alcohol

The Road Safety Authority has welcomed the granting of new powers, by the Minster for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar, to An Garda Síochána to test drivers for the presence of alcohol at the scene of road traffic collisions.

The measures, which come into force from Wednesday, require gardaí to conduct mandatory testing of drivers for alcohol at the scene of a crash where someone has been injured, or of a driver who has been injured and removed to hospital.

Mayo hair stylist named Irish Hairdresser of the Year 2011

Mayo hair stylist Louise Jordan, from Ballina, was named as the IHF Irish Hairdresser of the Year 2011 at the National Hairdressing Championships and OMC European Championships in hair and beauty. Louise competed in such categories as fantasy, day style and full fashion and was awarded a Gold OMC medal in the Senior Day Style category and Senior Trend Cut category. She works in MOHH Salon in Galway.

Calleary supports call for fair trade legislation in Ireland

Mayo TD Dara Calleary has called on the Government to introduce fair trade legislation without delay to ensure that farmers and food producers get a fair price for their produce.

The urgent need for laws governing the relationship between retailers and suppliers was highlighted in a Fianna Fáil Private Members motion on agriculture which was passed in the Dáil this week.

For almost three years now Finbar Hoban has been bringing the best of local original Irish bands to Castlebar in a series of shows that have gone from strength to strength from quality of performer to visuals and props. Verdict of accidental death in Gallagher case

A verdict of accidental death was returned by a jury following an eight-day inquest into the death of Achill woman Ashling Gallagher, who died in a road collision on the N59 in 2004.

The 22-year-old’s van collided with a cement truck near Mulranny. The family of Ashling claimed that the van skidded on an unfinished, temporary road surface, which had no warning signs. Mayo County Council denied responsibility for the crash.

Car and door to house smashed up in family fracas

Two men were sentenced to prison this week after they smashed up a car and door to a house of a Castlebar man.

Superintendent Peter O’Boyle outlined to Castlebar District Court that on March 4 2011, Jimmy McDonagh 11 The Grove, Castlebar and Owen McDonagh, 27 Castlegrove, Castlebar went to 1 Rowan Drive, Castlebar where they attacked a car belonging to John Maughan. Both defendants smashed the car windows with iron bars and bottles. Owen McDonagh also smashed the glass patio door of Mr Maughan’s residence.

Mellett, who is a native of Rathbawn Road, has risen to the rank of Flag Officer Commanding Naval Service, or as Mayor of Castlebar Cllr Ger Deere described him, “To you and me he’s the man in charge of the Irish Navy”.
