Westport councillor wants people fined for not wearing high-vis vests

Fianna Fáil town councillor Brendan Mulroy wants it to be an offence for anyone to walk on the roads without wearing a high-visability vest.

During the town council’s monthly meeting last week, the councillor said that the proposal “should be drawn up by this town council chamber that it should be an offence to be on the side of the road without wearing a high-vis vest.”

Funding of €120,000 for heritage town Westport

As part of being one of three towns selected nationwide as a heritage demonstration town, Westport will receive €120,000 this year to develop the pilot project.

According to town architect Simon Wall, €80,000 will be spent on capital projects and €30,000 on promotion. Mr Wall said that the council is working alongside the Clew Bay Heritage Centre, the Westport Historical Society, Westport House, the county council heritage officer and county archaeologist to draw up some plans.

Two thousand attend Mayo tourism promotion in Manchester

A Mayo tourism weekend promoting the 270 forthcoming Gathering events in the west of Ireland has been hailed as a resounding success by organisers. The weekend was staged during this year’s opening weekend for the 2013 Manchester Irish Festival, which is Europe’s biggest Irish festival with some 200 events staged during its 10 day festival (www.manchesteririshfestival.co.uk). Tickets for a series of concerts and plays sold out in advance and it attracted more than 2,000 visitors.

Watch the sunrise from Connacht’s Highest Mountain

Mayo's Mweelrea mountain has been selected as one of 10 Irish mountain locations to feature in the 2013 Sunrise Summit Challenge, taking place on April 14. Hikers, adventurers and families of all levels of experience are invited to take part in the Irish Red Cross charity event in which they will hike through the early morning darkness, reaching the mountain summit in time to watch the sunrise over Connacht.

The remote grit and sandstone massif of Mweelrea, also known as the Grey Bald Mountain, stands at 819 meters and is Connacht’s highest mountain. Vikki Walshe, Irish Red Cross Challenge Coordinator, says: “With spectacular views of Killary Harbour, the Atlantic coast and Connemara, Mweelrea offers beautiful sunrise summit experience.”
