Two Mayo students are finalists in national writing competition

Siobhan Halligan (second year, Mount St Michael Secondary School, Claremorris) and Catherine King (second year, Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Crossmolina) are both finalists in the 2013 John West Fantasy Writing Competition – and they are competing against each other in the same category. It is an impressive achievement for both girls as the competition attracted more than 11,000 entries this year.

Threat of jail hanging over drink driving farmer

A man with numerous road traffic convictions was before Castlebar District Court this week for a drink driving charge and for not having insurance, tax, or an NCT.

Gardaí observed a van being driven erratically at Ballyvary on April 21 2012 at 2.35am. William Knight, Rinaneel, Ballyglass, was arrested for drink driving and provided a blood specimen which showed 210mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

Man carried out unprovoked assault on fisherman

A Ballinrobe man who carried out an unprovoked assault on a man who was visiting the town to take part in an angling competition pleaded guilty to assault causing harm in Castlebar District Court this Tuesday. Sean O’Connor, 8 Tower View, Ballinrobe was arrested at 4.35am on the night of August 5 2012 on Main Street, Ballinrobe following the assault. Superintendent Joe Doherty told the court that O’Connor came out of an alley way and launched an attack on one of two men who were walking down the street together.

Not last call for struggling Mayo publicans as flexibility shown by Revenue

Pubs and other businesses in Mayo who are struggling to remain open due to difficulties in obtaining a tax clearance certificate when their tax payments are in arrears received some good news this week. Fine Gael TD for Mayo, Michelle Mulherin, has welcomed assurances provided to her by the chairman of the Revenue Commissioners that increased flexibility is being shown to businesses which are having difficulty getting their tax clearance certificate. As things stand, the Revenue Commissioners require a 40 per cent lump sum payment up front from businesses that are having difficulty paying. Revenue may now reduce this 40 per cent figure on a case by case assessment.
