Westport parish mission commences on Monday

As well as the Mission Mass which takes place at 7:30pm each evening there are a number of other events taking place during the four days. Rabbitte switches on smart lights in Crossmolina

Energy Minister Pat Rabbitte last night (Thursday) officially switched on Crossmolina’s smart street lighting, in what is a first-of-its-kind venture in Ireland. With the backing of Crossmolina Community Development and Mayo County Council, Crossmolina was chosen as a pilot town to test a new public lighting initiative that aims to result in long term savings to the town and council, as well as encouraging the delivery of other energy efficiency projects across the country.

It is a tragic story that appears regularly in newspapers across the nation. Often it takes up no more than a few column centimetres, and while the names are different the story still remains the same – a child has been killed or injured after being run over by a car reversing out of the family driveway. Tragically, in most of these cases, an adult member of the child's family, a neighbour, or a visitor to the house was driving the vehicle.

Prices of four-bed houses in Mayo up marginally

Asking prices for four-bed semi-detached houses in Mayo have shown tentative signs of growth in the third quarter of 2013, with the latest survey from property website MyHome.ie showing that prices for this house type rose by 0.4 per cent to €140,000 in the quarter.

Redrawing of EU elections map leaves Mayo in fifteen county constituency

The announcement this week of the redrafting of the EU constituencies for next year’s European Parliament elections has seen Mayo included in the new Midlands, North and West four seat constituency which stretches all the way from the Atlantic coast to the Irish Sea. Ireland has lost one seat in the parliament thanks to the accession of Croatia to the European Union, which has led to the redrawing of the boundaries and a reduction in a number of constituencies from four to three.
