Increased demand for Mayo Sports Partnership Services in 2012

Providing physical activity opportunities for some 8,000 people through 76 locally delivered sports programmes, an additional 7,000 females through 12 Women in Sport initiatives, 400 people with a disability participating locally, supplying information to 520 clubs / organisations and some 11,000 people contacting the Partnership for general and sports specific information were just some of the highlights of the 2012 annual report presented to board of the Mayo Sports Partnership recently. The boards function is to oversee the workings of the Sports Partnership and comprises representatives from local agencies, community and sporting organisations within the county.

Mayo people urged to make their will

Eighty charities who are all members of the MyLegacy organisation, in partnership with 400 solicitors, are joining forces for the third year running to encourage the people of Mayo to make a will and consider leaving a gift to their favourite charity, regardless of size and after family and friends have been looked after.

Attymass National School scoops top Repak award

Attymass National School scooped this year’s Repak/An Taisce Recycling Primary School of the Year award despite tough competition at the 2013 Repak Recycling Awards which took place in The Westin Dublin last week. Attymass National School is a five teacher school located near Ballina with a total of 60 students. A comprehensive review carried out by the committee highlighted the need to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill through intensive waste minimisation practices and a drive toward recycling and composting. Overall, a 77 per cent reduction in the number of plastic bottles was made, a huge achievement to the school.

Grid West project announces preferred corridor for high capacity power line

EirGrid has announced the emerging preferred route corridor for the Grid West project. The chosen 1km wide corridor, which will accommodate a new power line, starts north west of Moygownagh, runs west of Ballina, east of Foxford and Swinford, south of Charlestown and Ballaghaderreen before linking into the existing Flagford substation, near Carrick-on-Shannon.

Fuel poverty must be tackled—Ruane

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane, has welcomed the move by Electric Ireland to freeze its prices until January 2014 but warns that more needs to be done to tackle fuel poverty. She is calling on Labour to deliver on their party's promise to tackle fuel poverty and to use Budget 2014 to give some hope to families to make ends meet.
