Luisne Art Project works on view

Luisne Art Project is an arts disability project run for the users of Crann Mor Centre in Ballinrobe. The group meet at an art studio in TACU Family Resource Centre in Ballinrobe on a weekly basis. The workshops are facilitated by the artist Breda Murphy who has worked with the group from its foundation. The project has been running for eight years and during that time a huge range of artistic media has been explored by the artists and a number of collaborations with other groups have taken place.

Fine Gael town councillor Brendan Henaghan has welcomed the introduction of new legislation to provide for much larger health warnings on cigarette packets. The Cabinet has approved the heads of the Bill that will make it mandatory for tobacco to be sold in standardised packaging, which will greatly increase the health warnings and reduce the ability of tobacco manufacturers to promote their brand.

A Mayo man is one of the mentors on a new ground breaking eight part series on TG4 — Glaoch an Cheoil — that sets out to bring music into the lives of people who always wanted to learn to play an instrument but never had the opportunity. Fergal Ó Murchú is a native of Moygownagh in north Mayo and has the unique distinction of being an All-Ireland champion on no fewer than 11 occasions in traditional singing and is well-known as a solo performer with the Ragús show he founded.

Speaking this week in response to parliamentary question responses received from the office of the Minister for Social Protection, Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane has said has said that real jobs in the public sector are being displaced by cheap labour provided by JobBridge interns. She said “Here in Mayo, 152 cheap interns are being exploited under the JobsBridge scheme in public sector bodies while 44 JobBridge interns are being used by Mayo County Council.”

There has been an outpouring of grief in Claremorris this week at the sudden death at the age of 28 of Alan Feeley from a brain haemorrhage. Alan collapsed on Monday evening and was brought to University Hospital Limerick where he died on Tuesday evening. He was a teacher in Doon, County Limerick, for the past five years. Mr Feeley was a well known GAA player with Claremorris and rugby player with Old Crescent in Limerick. He is survived by his parents Willie, a well known GAA referee, his mother Kathleen, and his brothers Liam, Hugh and Donal. He will be laid to rest following his funeral Mass in St Colman’s Church, Claremorris, today at 2.30pm.
