Smarter Travel funding for Mayo projects

Three projects in Mayo have been awarded funding under the Smarter Travel Scheme as administered by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

The announcement was made by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring who explained that Smarter Travel projects are designed to encourage and facilitate a switch towards more sustainable transport methods such as pedestrianisation and cycling.

In Louisburgh, €30,000 has been allocated for the provision of cycle friendly roads with bike parking spaces. In Ballinrobe, €30,000 has been announced for the provision of cycle lanes and footpaths and for wall building. In Belmullet, €30,000 has been approved for cycle lanes with bike parking spaces.

“I am delighted to make this announcement today. Through the Smarter Travel Scheme people can be encouraged to avail of facilities for a more active lifestyle in a safer environment. These provisions will also increase the tourism potential of these areas,” concluded Minister Ring.
