Galway rowers have been selected to compete at the under-23 World Rowing Championships in Italy next month, from 23rd to 27th July.
Fionnain McQuillan-Tolan, who currently rows with Grainne Mhaol RC, Richard Bennett, Robert O'Callaghan, and Kevin Neville, all from the NUIG Boat Club, will contest the men’s four event at the championships in Varese which run from Julu 23 to 27.

Several of Galway’s best athletes raced at the Le Cheile track meeting in Kildare on Friday over a series of middle distance events.
Galway City Harrier’s 800 metre star Alanna Lally secured a World Championship Junior standard with a run of 2.08.49 in the women’s international event. Keith Fallon of GCH ran a good time of 1.53.41 in the men’s 800m, while Craughwell’s Peadar Harvey ran 1.58.6 and Damien O Boyle was just outside two minutes in the same event. Jamie Fallon of Craughwell ran a personal best of 4.00.40 in the 1500 metres.

The Galway minor footballers paid the ultimate price for their profligacy in the first 20 minutes of the Connacht semi-final in Tuam Stadium on Saturday, crashing out of the championship by 3-7 to 1-12.

After suffering a disappointing defeat to Longford Town Galway FC, manager Tommy Dunne wants his team to 'bounce back' immediately in tomorrow evening’s SSE Airtricity League first division at the RSC against Waterford United.
Following the 3-0 Longford loss a critical clash looms for the Tribesmen and Dunne is seeking an instant response. “We have to bounce back. It is as simple and straightforward as that,” he says. “We were not happy with how it went against Longford. We were flat, I thought the whole ground seemed flat, the supporters and the team.

Ireland's Junior World Championship winger, Galwegians Ciaran Gaffney, outhalf Conor McKeon, and centre Peter Robb are among the new quintet, along with hooker Jack Dineen and backrow Marc Kelly.
In addition tighthead prop Jamie Dever will rejoin the Academy this year, having been released on sabbatical last season due to a lengthy battle with a foot injury. He will come into year two of the Academy having already completed a season in 2012/13, while Shane Layden who had completed three years in the Academy, has been re-contracted for an additional year having missed the majority of a season due to injury, but he will train with the senior squad under coach Pat Lam.

The Galway minor footballers take on Mayo, the current All-Ireland minor champions, at Tuam Stadium this Saturday (5.30pm) in the Connacht semi-final.
John Donnellan's side had a convincing 1-13 to 1-7 win over Sligo at Markievicz Park last weekend and they must follow up that performance, seven days later with an even better display if they are to join the seniors in the Connacht final on July 13.
