Corinthians returned to pole position in the AIB League division three with a deserved 25 - 20 victory over Portadown in Chambers Park.

Although Corinthians started well with centre Wayne Williams on target with a third minute penalty, the home side, despite playing against the wind, grabbed the initiative. After levelling with a penalty, they then opened the try tally when winger Steve Coulter touched down in the corner after some fine work from their pack.

Galway ladies suffered a heartbreaking defeat on the opening day of the Bord Gáis Energy National Ladies Football League when Clare struck a winning goal with the last kick of tense encounter.

The two sides appeared to be heading for a draw on a cold and windswept Sunday afternoon in Killanin until last year’s All Ireland junior champions grabbed the winner with the last rally.

• A fans’ forum with new Galway United manager Ian Foster will be held next Monday night, February 2. Organised by Galway United Supporters’ Club, it will be held upstairs in Fibber Magees, Eyre Square (6.30pm). All United supporters are invited to attend.

Meanwhile 19 match threes won €10 each at Sunday night’s Galway United Lotto draw. There was no jackpot winner. The Galway United Lotto draw is now changing to a weekly subscribers/on-line draw. The next draw will be held in Terryland Park at half-time at the first home game of the 2009 season. The jackpot will be carried over until this date. Draws will be subsequently held every Friday. Marvellous St Michael’s reach All Ireland final

Croke Park and an All-Ireland final is now their final date with destiny at intermediate level, and roses and chocolates will have to be temporarily replaced by flags, hats, and headbands. The city club has really caught the imagination these last few months and as a reward for their majestic win over Ballyroan last Sunday they will face St Michael's, Foilmore (Kerry), in the final under lights at 7.45pm on Saturday February 14.
