Picking most teams at any level is a difficult exercise, unless of course you have absolute stand-out players like Ja Fallon, Padraic Joyce, Sean Og De Paor, Tomas Mannion, Michael Donnellan, Derek Savage and company, in their prime.Then it is just a matter of handing out the jerseys and letting the talented guys show the world how they have been blessed by God and mother-nature.

1. Adrian Faherty – Claregalway
A close call between Adrian and last year’s custodian Paul Doherty. Faherty needs to work on varying his kick-out. He has a booming kick, but he needs to mix it up a bit and try to hit his wing-forwards more or even pop a few short ones to his wing-backs to avoid becoming too predictable.

•Headford GAA Club celebrates the official opening of its new clubhouse on Sunday April 26 with Galway football manager Liam Sammon performing the duty at 2.15pm. This will be followed by a Junior A league game featuring Headford and Kilkerrin/Clonberne before a special senior intercounty challenge takes place between Galway and Cavan at 3pm.

• Galway gardai take to the GAA pitch next Tuesday (April 28) to contest the John Lovett Memorial Trophy. Both male and female gardai over 30 will square up to their younger counterparts at Pearse Stadium (3pm) to contest the tournament in memory of the well known Galway garda who was involved in many sports including the Salthill GAA Club. All proceeds from the day go directly to Console, the suicide and counselling support organisation in Galway. Entry to the stadium is free and all are welcome.

A hectic recent schedule packed with matches has hampered Mervue United, but they return to Station Road tomorrow, the scene of the club’s most polished performance.
That occurred in last November’s First Division Play/Off when Mervue United trounced Kildare County with a display that was effective, enthusiastic, and ultimately efficient. Such industry will need to be replicated again as Mervue are fully aware of how mediocre Kildare have been thus far. Still that brings difficulties too as Kildare are likely to be gritty and determined following two cruel losses to promotion contenders Sporting Fingal and UCD.
