Connacht youth on Irish squad for Italy

Connacht’s Paul O’Donnell has been selected on the Irish u-18 clubs team that will take on Italy in Rovigo on Saturday. The 17-years-old hookerjoined Galwegians Academy when he was eight and has played with the senior Calasanctius College side. The son of well known sportsman Brian O’Donnell, Paul was selected on the Irish team following strong performances for Connacht in the Autumn Interprovincial Series. Ireland will play three international matches during the spring, the first of which takes place on Saturday in Italy.

From the high of their Heineken Cup victory over Harlequins and a two week break, Connacht return to competitive action in the Pro 12 when they travel to Cardiff to take on the Blues tomorrow evening.
The challenge for Eric Elwood's men is to deliver the type of performance they displayed in Europe in the bread and butter competition of the Celtic League. If they do not, they will languish at the bottom of the table where Italian strugglers Aironi are poised to overtake them, while a win could see them leap the Dragons.

Galway Ladies opened their National Football League campaign with a 3-14 to 1-7 defeat at the hands of Connacht rivals Mayo at Tuam Stadium on Sunday.
In Galway manager Con Moynihan’s first game in charge, Cora Staunton once again inflicted most of the damage on the hosts who fielded a number of new faces, with the Carnacon stalwart firing a whopping 2-9 of Mayo’s tally.
