National cross-country championships
The National cross-country championships were held at the National Sports Campus in Abbottstown, Dublin, last Sunday and there was some great success for Galway athletes, in what is the most competitive event of the season. There was a full juvenile programme for U12 to U18, junior races, and the combined senior clubs and county competitions for ladies and men on the card.

Connacht are back in action this Sunday against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth after a two week break.
The province currently sits in fifth place in Conference A, only two points off a play-off spot as they prepare for their two game tour of South Africa. Coach Andy Friend says the break came at the perfect time for his side after a run of 10 games.

The 2016 county champions St Thomas’ over powered defending champions Liam Mellows on a magnificent winter’s afternoon for hurling last Sunday at Pearse Stadium to claim a third Tom Callanan Cup in seven years - winning with some ease on a score-line of St Thomas’ 2-13 to 0-10 for Liam Mellows.

On Sunday in MacHale Park – Galway club champions Corofin put their provincial and All-Ireland club titles on the line when they take on Mayo champions Ballintubber (2pm).
Corofin hit 4-22 in their facile win over a poor Clann na nGael outfit in their provincial semi-final win in Hyde Park and will not have learned too much from that outing.

There was mixed fortunes for Maree BC in cup action on Saturday, withthe men’s Superleague side bowing out of the Pat Duffy Cup when losing 83-80 at home to Griffith College Swords Thunder. However the club’s senior women are through to the Hula Hoops division one cup quarter-finals, thanks to an 86-59 win at home to Phoenix Rockets of Belfast.
That was the fourth win from four for the senior women’s side, who now face Limerick Celtics in the last eight of the competition in Limerick next month.
