New Connacht hockey academy is a welcome boost for hockey and women in sport

A sporting initiative to develop hockey players in Ireland has taken a step forward with the launch of the Connacht Hockey Academy.

Launched by former Irish international Elayne McDermott, the academy aims to nurture local talent and develop a pool of players for inter-provincial and national squads from U16 to senior level.

Sean Breathnach of Galway City Harriers secured yet another title at the National Senior Track and Field Championships last weekend in Santry, Dublin.

Many of Galway’s top athletes were in action, but it was Breathnach who took top billing when he claimed a comprehensive victory in the Weight for Height event. He produced a massive best throw of 4.60 metres, narrowly missed breaking the National record of 4.95m with his final throw.

Barna display new lease of life as football championship continues

The Claregalway Hotel Senior Football Championship is heating up after the latest group games ensure there is still much to play for in round three.

In group 1, Seán Conlon’s Barna enjoyed a close win over a Salthill-Knocknacarra side that many saw as potential challenger’s for the Frank Fox Cup. Barna, who have been battling relegation over the last couple of seasons, appear to have a new lease of life under Conlon’s guidance. The 0-13 to 0-11 win sees Barna shoot to the top of the table with two wins from two and in pole position to qualify. The other game between St Michael’s and An Spidéal was another closely-fought encounter where the city side emerged winners by two points. Eddie Hoare was prominent on the scoresheet for Michael’s. This group now goes down to the wire in two weeks as all sides have the chance to qualify, albeit An Spidéal has an outside chance.

Galway Women inflict double woes on Bohs

On Saturday afternoon Galway Women’s FC defeated Bohemians home and away in the U17 and senior FAI Women’s National League.

The seniors travelled to the Oscar Traynor Centre and must have thought they were in for an easy afternoon when after 17 minutes a challenge by Bohemians' goalkeeper Courtney Maguire on Aoife Thompson saw Bohs reduced to 10. However, it was not until 52 minutes when Galway made the advantage count when Thompson opened the scoring, and that only lasted two minutes when Bronagh Kane equalised for the Dubliners.

Former Connacht Rugby player Tom McCartney joined the club in 2014 and quickly established himself as a key playing member and a leader during his time at the Sportsground. A PRO12 medal winner, he was selected on the 2016 Dream Team, and played more than a 100 games for Connacht. When McCartney’s season before retirement was cut short due to Covid-19, he returned with his family to New Zealand, missing an assured fond farewell from all the Connacht fans. Oranmore pitch will be lost to hockey if pitch goes 3G

Galway hockey clubs are up in arms over the proposed loss of a playing pitch in Oranmore, which is used by players throughout the county.

A campaign, entitled Misneach Le Cheile Connacht Hockey, hopes to stop the planned change from the current 2g pitch to a 3g surface, which is unsuitable for hockey, as part of a new sports complex in Oranmore. It leaves only one full sized pitch in Galway city suitable for the sport.
