The opening race of today's card is a Grade 3 Novice chase with runners from all the big Irish yards; however, it is the Yorkshire-based Irish trainer Adrian Keatley who could have the first winner of the day. This six-year-old mare ran away with a novice hurdle race against the boys at last year's meeting, and her recent outings over fences in England suggest that she may be up to the task today. While on paper she has a bit to find ratings-wise, she should like the ground, and the trip will be fine. It will most probably be an each-way price considering the likes of the Mullins duo, Westport Cove & Runcok are likely to run along with Special Cadeau & Ma Belle Etoile from the De Bromhead stable. Special Cadeau is an interesting runner and if it is the pick of Darragh O'Keeffe, could be the one to give the selection most to worry about.

Last year’s Galway Hurdle winner is where I will start with a look at this year’s Plate. This progressive five-year-old has been campaigned well since last year’s success with a good mix of flat and chase runs. Two of those runs stand out to me as to why Joseph O’Brien’s charge will be hard beaten in this year’s Plate. His run back in Cheltenham, finishing fourth behind high-class novice Caldwell Potter, suggests there is a big future ahead. The winner was six lengths ahead of the second that day, but O’Brien’s runner was just a further two lengths behind that and considering Nurburgring is a full two years younger than most of the runners that day suggests the potential in this horse is only being tapped into, and a race like the plate should be well within reach. The other run was during Royal Ascot and the long-distance handicap, where he finished an unlucky second, eating up the ground on the run-in, suggesting the horse is in fine fettle, enjoying his racing and will be happy back in Ballybrit.

Galway United and Connacht Hockey seek planning permission for new multipurpose sport facility in Athenry

The facility will be a game changer for Galway sports as it will consist of two full-size football pitches – one grass and one all-weather – and a full-size hockey pitch. Changing facilities, administrative offices, meeting rooms and a high-performance gymnasium will also be in the floodlit facility.

The Mountain South facility will be the academy training centre for Galway United’s men’s and women’s teams who compete across multiple age groups at elite level in the League of Ireland. It will also facilitate the continued growth of grassroots hockey in the catchment areas of Athenry, Tuam, Loughrea, Ballinasloe and beyond.
