After being closed for a month, Halo reopens for business tomorrow night. The popular nightclub has undergone a full refurbishment and a huge level of interest has been generated as to what will be unveiled for the venues customers. Now nearing the eighth anniversary of its opening, Halo has been Galway’s premier night time venue for the over 23s.

Heads turned last week in Galway city centre as the future Queen of England, “Kate Middleton” stepped out at the Hotel Meyrick on Eyre Square. As much as it is wished Kate would visit Galway, it was actually a promotional shoot with the hotel’s very own “Galway Kate” in support of Enable Ireland Galway and the ISPCC.

Hundreds will take to the streets on Sunday May 15 for Console’s Suicide Prevention and Postvention Memorial Walk. The walk is in aid of the Suicide Bereaved and Suicide Prevention Service and will be started by Michael D Higgins. Console is calling on families, friends, school friends and work colleagues to take to the streets and support a worthy cause.
The charity is hoping people from every county in Ireland will take the opportunity to help raise funds for families whose lives have been torn apart by suicide and those in suicidal crisis. The annual walk is entitled ‘Walking in Memory of Our Loved Ones’ and starts at 2pm from Claddagh Hall. The route leads to Blackrock and back to Claddagh Hall, where weary walkers can enjoy refreshments.

With Fianna Fáil reduced to just 20 TDs, party leader Micheál Martin had the easy task of giving everyone in the party opposition spokesperson positions, including both Galway FF TDs.
Galway West TD and former minister for social protection Éamon Ó Cuív has been appointed to the position of party spokesperson on communications, energy, and natural resources. Galway East TD and Micheal Kitt has been appointed as spokesperson on housing, planning, and Gaeltacht Affairs.

The owner of five star Zenith Hairdressing on Eyre Street, Paul has an impressive resume at home and abroad, working at the highest level as an educator, platform artist, a photographic contributor to countless publications, and he has gained numerous qualifications and awards. The award is the culmination of 20 years of dedicated work in his field and he becomes the only person in Ireland to be honoured in this way.

The winner of Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh 2011 will be announced by Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs Dinny McGinley at an event in the Glenlo Abbey Hotel at 7pm today (Thursday). Six shortlisted businesses and organisations, representing a variety of sectors in Galway, are vying for the prize.
Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh, which recognises companies and organisations for their commitment to the Irish language, is awarded in two categories. In the category for organisations with up to 20 employees the finalists are EmployAbility Services Galway, Food 4 Thought, and the Galway Dive School. In the category for those with 20 or more employees the finalists are Joyce’s Supermarket, Menlo Park Hotel, and Monroe’s Tavern.

Galway received a significant employment boost on Tuesday when Avaya announced it is creating 75 new positions at their offices in Mervue Business Park. The jobs are part of the company’s new Customer Experience Centre, which opened with a special ribbon cutting ceremony by Michael Bayer, president of Avaya’s field operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Barry O’Leary, CEO of the Industrial Development Authority Ireland.

A Garda Superintendent from Tuam Garda Station is to play a pivotal role in an investigation into alledged comments made by three gardai during the arrest of Corrib oil protesters.
Two separate investigations were launched following allegations that a sergeant and two gardai had arrested two women near the Corrib gas pipeline in Mayo and then subsequently joked about threatening to rape and deport one of the women.
