Portumna Cycling Club will hold a fundraising event next month in aid of local woman Olive (Dermody) Shaughnessy, with a series of cycle routes to suit all ages and abilities.
The Olive Aughty Cycle on Sunday August 9 features a fun 15km family cycle with refreshments along the way. More experienced and adventurous cyclists can take part in a 50k or 100k scenic route around the Sliabh Aughty Mountains. This event promotes healthy recreation and will help in some way to financially support Ms Shaughnessy and her husband Tom and four children as they deal with the reality of life threatening cancer and the impact on their lives.

Redeveloping the Galway-Mayo railway corridor stands to reap significant rewards for local communities, but trying to revive it as an actual working railway is only a "pie in the sky" dream.
This is the view of Labour's Galway East senator Lorraine Higgins, who said that despite assertions to the contrary, there is "little to no likelihood" of the Western Railway corridor being reinstated. She said EU funding will not be forthcoming as the area "does not have a critical mass of population", while Government funding is also unlikely because such a rail service "does not make economic sense".

Plans for the construction of a new state-of-the-art school building for Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh had appeared to be in jeopardy as around half of the proposed site was located on industrial-zoned lands, which cannot be used for the development of educational facilities.
