Former NUI Galway Registrar and Deputy President, Professor Nollaig Mac Congáil will launch Dr SéamAs Ó Direáin’s A Survey of Spoken Irish in the Aran Islands, Co. Galway on Friday, 9 October at 1.30pm in Áras na Gaeilge, NUI Galway.

Created over a period of 25 years, A Survey of Spoken Irish in the Aran Islands, Co. Galway represents the life’s work of Californian linguist Dr Séamas Ó Direáin, whose grandparents emigrated from Inis Mór to Boston over 100 years ago. Dr Ó Direáin, who turns 77 this October, first started learning Irish from expats in Kenya in the 1970s where he was researching African languages. Over 40 years later, he is delighted to make his Survey available for free and online from 9 October.

Together the two Credit Unions have been working together on a number of projects to ensure a consistent, reliable service for their membership and joined forces to put themselves forward for the award which is the culmination of both continuous training and evaluation of Member Service which took place over a period of a number of months. The evaluation involved an independent ‘Mystery Shopping’ assessment of branches in person and via telephone which assessed a number of criteria including the member service experience, ambience and atmosphere, layout of offices, website, social media engagement as well as the all-important, staff friendliness and helpfulness.

Frank and Mary Duane are a typical hard-working country couple. Both quietly spoken, they opened a small shop in the 1940s beside their home in Kiltullagh. A lifetime of hard graft has resulted in the building of a successful shop, post-office, filling station, and hardware business which is now operated by their two sons Anthony and Sean. The couple are 'semi retired' but like all businesspeople, it is in their blood and they still take an active role in day-to-day proceedings.

Surgery for special needs child cancelled on several occasions

A child with special needs who is waiting on an operation at University Hospital Galway has had it cancelled on a number of occasions.

Fianna Fail councillor Mary Hoade raised the issue at a meeting of the Regional Health Forum West this week. She said it was “not fair” to keep cancelling the surgery, especially at the last minute. Her family learned of the cancellation on some occasions the night before.
