Ireland West Airport staff raise €30,000 for three charities

Ireland West Airport staff were delighted last week to present a cheque for €30,550 to the airport’s three nominated charities for 2016 - Cancer Care West, MS Ireland and Pieta House . In late 2015, in a new initiative by the airport, Ireland West Airport staff voted to select three Irish charities for the inaugural Ireland West Airport Charity of The Year programme for 2016.

‘For Auld Lang Syne’

There is probably no more sentimntal song in the world than Robbie Burns ‘Auld Lang Syne’, traditionally sung at the conclusion of New Year gatherings in Scotland and around the world, especially in English-speaking countries.

As well as celebrating the New Year, ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is widely used to symbolise other “endings/new beginnings” – including farewells, funerals, and other leavetakings. I have wept uncontrollably on occasions singing or even just hearing that evocative tune, and those words.

Galway to benefit as new €500K Wild Atlantic Way campaign launches to lure British visitors

Fáilte Ireland, in conjunction with five local authorities from Galway City and County, Mayo, Sligo, Donegal, and in partnership with Tourism Ireland, has launched a €500K Wild Atlantic Way advertising campaign in Britain. The campaign is particularly targeting British visitors to entice them to take a break along the Wild Atlantic Way from Galway to Donegal and is aimed at UK cities with good access to the region.

The Galway Archaeological & Historical Society AGM

The Galway Archaeological & Historical Society AGM takes place in the Harbour Hotel on Monday, 9th January, 2017, and will be preceded by a Lecture, commencing at 8.00 p.m. to be given by Peadar O’Dowd entitled, “1916 and the Fight for Independence – Impact on a Galway Family”. The family involved is the former Crowe family of Bohermore, in which Martin, Julia and William were active during the Fight for Independence, while their father, John, escaped death from English naval shelling during the 1916 Galway rebellion. Martin was subsequently interred in Ballykinlar Internment Camp in County Down during 1921, and his story is contained in Vol. 48 (1996) of the society’s journal.

Peadar O’Dowd, a retired GMIT lecturer, is a historian and columnist, and is the author of several publications on Galway, city and county.

Galway County Council website wins national award for commemoration

The National Library of Ireland (NLI) has announced that Galway County Council’s website Decade of Commemoration was one of the ten winning websites, chosen by the public, which they believe best record Irish life in 2016 and remember the events of 1916. The websites will be preserved in the NLI’s National Web Archive and were announced by Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD, at an award ceremony in the Library’s historic Kildare Street.

‘Remembering 1916, Recording 2016’ is the NLI’s largest and most ambitious web archiving project to date, with over 600 websites archived this year which can be accessed openly online, anywhere in the world. The project is part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme and NLI 2016, the commemorative programme in the National Library, supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.

The Menlo Park Hotel Galway tomorrow welcomes back The Galway Christmas Model & Diorama Show which will be held in the hotel on tomorrow Friday Dec 30. The event has grown in size from last year and will show more exhibitors and model trade stalls than last year. Over 500 adults and children attended the show last year and the same, if not more, is expected again this year.
