Tomorrow women around the globe can raise a glass to themselves and toast International Women's Day. Whether a homemaker, mudwrestler, or international diplomat, women may still be underestimated, but crucially they no longer underestimate themselves.
International Women's Day was first inspired by American garment workers who had marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights at the turn of the century. While Women's Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration, sadly some of those same issues are as relevant today as they were more than a century ago.

Last year Coláiste Cholumba, an Irish summer college in the Connemara Gaeltacht, launched a recession busting two-week summer course to huge success. This year extra spaces have been added to cater for the huge numbers applying. However spaces are very limited and with all courses being oversubscribed last year, all indications are that this trend will continue for 2013. You can now enjoy 14 days of the same Gaeltacht experience with all its spraoi, spóirt, craic and ceol, while learning Irish, which has made Coláiste Cholumba a huge success for more than 40 years.

The International College for Personal and Professional Development (ICPPD) is based in Athlone with outreach centres at Belfast, Dublin, Galway, and Wexford. The ICPPD was set up to inspire, encourage, and support continuous learning. The college provides training and education to adult learners interested in personal development or a career in counselling and psychotherapy, and to professionals already working in those areas.
The ICPPD will hold an open evening on Wednesday March 27 at GMIT, Galway, from 6pm to 8pm.

NUI Galway is in line for a major slice of the €300 million in funding for research announced this week. The university will participate in three of the seven new Science Foundation Ireland research centres being set up with this funding.
The funding, which comprises €200 million in Exchequer funds and a €100m co-investment by more than 150 industry partners, is targeted at scientific research which is closely aligned to industry and enterprise needs, job opportunities, and societal goals. It is the largest ever State/industry co-funded research investment in Ireland.

The organisation, which is made up of people who abstain from alcohol, will visit schools as part of its efforts to highlight the need for a shift in attitudes, the complexity of addiction and the impact of alcohol abuse on both individuals and families.
