Walsh pledges to oppose any attempt to introduce water charges

Any attempts by City Hall to introduce water charges on the people of Galway city will be met with resistance and opposition, Fine Gael councillor Brian Walsh has warned.

At Monday’s city council meeting, councillors heard a presentation on the Western River Basin District Management Plan which assessed the quality of Galway’s drinking water and the state of Lough Corrib and the River Corrib.

Lucy Murray, a fifth year student in Dominican College, Taylor’s Hill recently attended a workshop in Trinity College where the aim was the creation of a Charter for 21st Century Learning. The emphasis was that the education system needed to change to fit the needs of our society but change will not happen if there is no evidence that it is wanted. A Clare man who was highly abusive and insulting to gardai and hospital staff and had to be held down to be treated in A&E was described in court as a “nuisance and a menace”.

Judge Raymond Groarke made the comments at the Galway Circuit Appeals Court last Tuesday after hearing the details of the charges brought against John Higgins who lodged an appeal against the severity of a sentence imposed in the district court.
